Soon there would be a new tramway in Nice. It is all a debate there.
First of all, where the line should be implemented? On the famous Promenade des Anglais or in the centre.
Some are in favour …
According to MP and mayor of the city, Christian Estrosi, the second tramline of the city should cross the Promenade des Anglais, the city will prosper and it is a way to struggle against pollution. The works will last only six months; it won’t be a nuisance for the residents. This would also be an embellish method of the Prom’. The Prom will be cleaner, greener, and calmer. Finally, the construction of a tramline even if it is an expensive project will allocate employment which is not bad at all!
Some are against…
The tram will ruin the Promenade. According to them, a tramline should cross the city centre where there are already special lines for buses; this is the right place to have a tram, on the Avenue de la Californie.
Those who are going to suffer the most with the new tramway in Nice are the taxis. We should note that taxis in Nice are requested mostly between the city center and the airport. In that way, the tram will be a rude competitor. First because of the price, cheaper than any taxi fares, then, the tram will be more rapid and cleaner for the environment.
One way to compete is to provide the user with a better offer. Taxis should work with fixed rates and seasoned tickets. This would be a good way to introduce the taxi service within a tourist package. Tour operators, hotels can offer this service to their customer.
Is it the time to suppress the taxi meters?
The taxi drivers are in general the first contact of tourists when they arrive in the city. Nice tourist information office would like them to be the new ambassadors of the city. Indeed, it would like the taxi driver give a brochure and a map to each tourist he drives.
The other solution for taxis to face the new tramway in Nice is to launch green cabs! Yes, adopt the green attitude and protect the environment of Nice.
