The city of Menton is against photovoltaic solar panels
Photovoltaic solar panels are used in order to convert sunlight directly into electricity. Nowadays, there is a huge demand for clean sources of energy.
The MP and mayor of Menton city, Jean-Claude Guibal, is against these types of panels. To his mind they are far from being aesthetic for the roofs of the city. He said that is a matter of cultural inheritance for the city.
An important debate is going on between the municipality and the inhabitants of the city who wish to adopt photovoltaic systems.
As far as the population is concerned, the architecture of the city has evolved toward modernism. This is time to approve this kind of system.
For the city’s authority, the landscape, the beauty of the old district is protected, even antennas are avoided and substitute by cables. It is a question of identity, of landscaping. Menton is a Mediterranean city and it should stay as it is. According to the Mayor, “Nice has become a Californian city and Monaco, an Asian type city with its buildings”…
Moreover, Menton is an attraction for the tourists who will no longer be seduced by the city with these panels; it will lose its charm.
Finally, the Mayor is sure that technologies will evolve soon and we will get more aesthetic solar panels in the future.
For the moment, photovoltaic solar panels are allowed only if they are not visible from the outside….difficult to attract the sun!
